GFA Falls To Hyde 59-43 In NEPSAC Tourney

Greenwich's Hunter Eggers scores 15 points for the Dragons, who conclude their season at 18-5

An ultra successful season for the Greens Farms Academy boys basketball team ended Thursday as the Dragons suffered a 59-43 loss to Hyde School in the quarterfinals of the NEPSAC Class C tournament.

Greenwich's Hunter Eggers scored 15 points for GFA, which concluded the season at 18-5. Hyde improved to 15-8 and will face either Hamden Hall or the Wheeler School (R.I) in the semifinals on Friday. That game, also scheduled for Wednesday, was postponed because of inclement weather during the comment from Rhode Island.

"We can’t play with a team that is that athletic after a week-long layoff," said GFA coach Doug Scott, whose team had won a school-record 15 straight games before getting upset by the King School 64-62 in the FAA playoffs last week. "We needed to be game-speed sharp, not practice-speed dull."

Greenwich's Sean Obi added 11 points and 16 rebounds for GFA, but Scott felt the Dragons were hurt by too many empty possessions. Hyde led 27-18 at the half.

"The ball seemed like a greased pig with all of the fumbled catches, missed high-percentage shots and turnovers," he said. "All of those empty possessions just fueled their running game."

A boarding school located in Woodstock with no Connecticut players, Hyde avenged a 56-53 loss to GFA on Feb. 8. Robert Lewis scored 21 points and Christian Ejiga added 14 for Hyde.

"We were in a sharp midseason groove when we beat them three weeks ago," Scott added. "Today, we just stepped all over ourselves against their excellent pressure.”

UConn star Andre Drummond sat on the GFA bench during the game, but he didn't bring the Dragons much luck.

"I should have subbed him in," Scott joked. "I'm firing Andre Drummond as our good luck charm."‏
