Guilford's Sarah Trowbridge Third in London Olympics Double Sculls Heat

She and teammate Margo Shumway raced early this morning at Eton Dorney.

Guilford's Sarah Trowbridge placed third in the second heat of the women's double sculls races this morning in the London Olympics.

Trowbridge and her teammate, Margot Shumway, raced at 5:20 a.m. (our time) and finished with a time of 6:55.25. Their time was not good enough to earn an automatic berth in the final, as only the top two boats from each heat get automatic spots.

Instead, Trowbridge and Shumway will race in the repechage round, where the top two finishers gain a spot in the final race will determine the last two boats in the final.

The overall winner in this morning's double sculls races, which started at 5:20 a.m., London time, was the British team, which finished 6:44.33 in the first heat.

The races are taking place at the Olympic rowing course in Eton Dorney, about 30 miles outside of London.

Trowbridge and Shumway, who trained for the Olympics in Old Lyme, will race again tomorrow. NBC will carry air today's races later this morning.

Trowbridge, 29, first began rowing in 2000 with Old Lyme's Blood Street Sculls and she's been on five senior national teams and has five medals from international racing. Shumway, of Westlake, Ohio, is also a member of a national racing team who made it to the 2008 Olympics.
