Honoring a Friend Through Soccer: Preston Hirten Memorial Tourney

The fourth annual Preston Hirten Memorial Soccer Tournament is slated for Saturday, July 6, at Wakeman Park.

The tournament was started in memory of 2007 Staples High School graduate Preston Hirten, who died suddenly in 2009 on the soccer field while a student at the University of Mary Washington.

Friends and teammates thought the best way to honor Hirten was to play the game he loved so much -- and so the tournament was founded.

Last year's event drew nearly 100 participants from near and far to play for Hirten, according to Hirten's mother, Lisa. Teams and individual players included alumni and current players from Staples High School, the University of Mary Washington in Virginia, Beachside Soccer CLub, and other Fairfield County teams.

There is no fee for to participate 7v7 format tournament -- just a love for soccer.
