Mike Greenberg Speaks About New Book, Kids and Life in Westport

On Wednesday night, Mike Greenberg of ESPN Radio's Mike and Mike in the Morning spoke about his new book at the Westport Public Library.

He shot hoops during a pick-up game in Chicago with Michael Jordan, cynically aspires to be the next MLB Commissioner and still has time to coach his children's local sports teams. Mike Greenberg is a media personality and author, but most importantly a Westport dad.

Greenberg's recently published book, Mike and Mike's Rules for Sports and Life, was the hot topic Wednesday night at the Westport Public Library. He addressed a crowd who came to hear his take on sports, journalism and family values. This 239-paged witty hardcover is filled with Greeny's (Greenberg's nickname) ongoing dialogue with partner Mike Golic.

More than 3 million daily listeners tune in to Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN Radio to hear the Golic and Greenberg back-and-forth banter about sports and popular culture. They even manage to give advice on how to fight with your wife.

His first published book, New York Times bestseller, Why My Wife Thinks I'm an Idiot, was completely written within the walls of the Westport Public Library. While taking out his 11:30 lunch from Chef's Table, Greeny would walk back down Main Street remarking at the town's beauty and watching the ducks swim in the Saugatuck River. His latest novel promises to be just as enlightening.

Chapters titled "One Day, Athletes Will Rule the World," and "A House Without a Baseball Glove Is Not a Home," Greeny's entertaining quotes are appropriately printed in a green font. "… I still have to go over my plan on how to revamp baseball's wild-card format. And the rules for a good mani-pedi," he wrote.

After graduating from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, his first beat was covering the Chicago Bulls' Michael Jordan. The pinnacle of that assignment was learning about Jordan's competitive nature during a pick-up game of basketball when they hit the hardwood together.

His initial introduction into the world of sports was through his father, who possessed season tickets for various sporting events and always took him along to the games. While his father taught him to be a great fan of sports, Greeny has continued the tradition with his own children.

Coaching both his son's and daughter's respective sports teams has taught Greenberg to view things in a different way. "I'm like Joe Girardi," joked Greenberg. "I take my children's sports so seriously. I had a lump in my throat at the end of the season when I had to say 'goodbye' to the kids."

While Greenberg and co-host Mike Golic have worked for more than 10 years and attended 11 Super Bowls together, he has yet to watch his favorite NFL team, the Jets, at the big game in person.
