Staples Boys Soccer Beats Bassick, 4-1, In Regular Season Finale

Wreckers earned the No. 2 seed in the FCIAC playoffs and host New Canaan on Friday.

Playing without their starters, the Staples' boy soccer team closed out the regular season Wednesday with a 4-1 victory over Bassick in Bridgeport.

Court Lake knocked in a rebound of Lorez Esposito's shot to get the Wreckers on the board 17 minutes into the contest.

Staples settled for only a 1-0 lead at the half but erupted for three goals after intermission. Two minutes into the second half, Greg Gudis scored on a blast after gaining possession near midfield.

Coach Dan Woog rested his starters for Friday's playoff opener. Staples, which is seeking its 27th FCIAC championship, will host No. 7 Trumbull at 3 p.m.

Trumbull (7-4-4) actually was one of the two teams to beat the Wreckers during the regular season, though it came early in the year.

Staples fell to the Golden Eagles, 3-1, on September 16 in its second game of the season. The Wreckers were then blanked by Bridgeport Central, 1-0,  four days later, but haven't lost since.

Trumbull clinched a playoff spot with a scoreless tie against Darien on Wednesday.

In the other quarterfinal matchups, No. 1 Norwalk takes on No. 8 New Canaan, No. 3 Greenwich hosts No. 6 Wilton and No. 4 Fairfield Warde entertains No. 5 Ridgefield.

If the Wreckers advance, they will meet Greenwich or Wilton in the semifinals Monday at Fairfield Ludlowe.  The finals are set for next Wednesday at Norwalk at 7 p.m..
