Staples Boys' Soccer Edges Ridgefield, 1-0 [VIDEO]

Ben Root scored the game's only goal in the fifth minute as the Wreckers improved to 5-0

For years, maybe decades, the trademark of the Staples boys soccer pogram has been defense, so maybe it's fitting that the Wreckers' favorite score seems to be 1-0.

The Wreckers won their third such game of the season against Ridgefield on Wednesday at Loeffler Field as they made a goal by Ben Root in the fifth minute hold up.

The beginning and end of the contest was played in a steady rain, but Staples, the defending two-time FCIAC champions, overcame the conditions to improve to 5-0.

The Wreckers have allowed only one goal all season but while it wasn't the case Wednesday, they also can score when they need to. Staples registered seven and five goals, respectively,  in wins over Bridgeport Central and Trinity Catholic.

Staples had numerous chances to extend its lead Wednesday, but the Wreckers were repeatedly thwarted by Tigers' goalkeeeper Kyle Gurtowski, who finished with 12 saves. Ridgefield slipped to 2-3-1.

James Hickock didn't face as much pressure, recording three saves for the Wreckers.

Lorenz Esposito assisted on the game's only goal when he sent a cross in front to Root, who found the net despite being closely defended.
