Staples Boys Win Class LL Indoor Track Championship
Staples' Henry Wynne finishes first in the 1,000-meters while the Wreckers dominate the relay races
The Staples High School boys indoor track team won the Class LL championship Thursday evening at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.
On the strength of a dominant performance in the relay races, the Wreckers posted a winning score of 80.5, 25 1/2 points better than runner-up Greenwich (55). Danbury (42) was third, followed by Amity (41) and Conard (34).
Staples' Henry Wynne won the 1,000-meter race with a time of 2:30.42, almost three seconds ahead of runner-up David Pugliese of Xavier (2:33.02).

The junior also was a member of the Wreckers' winning 4-x400 (Jon Heil, Walker Marsh, Max Hoberman) and 1,600 sprint relay (Zachary Mitchell, David Hoffman, Marsh) teams. The Wreckers also finished second in the 4x200 and 4x800 relays.
In addition, Dean Hefnawy (13-00) and Matthew Mula (12-06) gave Staples a one-two finish in the pole vault while Hoberman finished third in the long jump.

The Staples girls finished sixth (26) behind Glastonbury (91), Greenwich (74), Norwich Free Academy (51), Amity (40) and McMahon (36).
Lexie Schachne won the pole vault for the Wreckers with a leap of 11-06.
