Original story:

The Staples Wreckers baseball team finished off the regular season with a strong offensive performance, scoring 27 unanswered runs.

Their defense was not to be overlooked, though, as starting pitcher Eric Lombardo led the Wreckers to a shut-out finish.

"We took care of business," said head coach Jack McFarland. "We had some good swings and excellent pitching."

McFarland said Senior Day is a tribute to the players who have been with the team for four years.

"They are great leaders," McFarland said.

Senior infielder Frank Vartuli hit a home run and finished with multiple RBIs.

"I am proud of him," said Vartuli's father, Frank. "He has put a lot of time in."

The Wreckers baseball team has made the playoffs for the past seven seasons, and Vartuli said he hopes to keep the streak going.

Wilton has to lose to New Canaan Thursday night in order for Staples to advance to the playoffs. The Wreckers moved on to 12-8 following their victory at home Thursday.

"The kids are positive moving forward. Once we get into the dance, anything can happen," Vartuli said.

Seniors Eli Andrew, James Frusciante, Greg Salamone, Chris Speer, Bryan Terzian, Anthony Amaru, Doug Bonenfant, Matt Cambell, Jarrett Goodness, Turi Latella, Eric Lombardo, Alex Ludel, Matt Smith, and Frank Vartuli were honored at the end of the game.
