Staples Football One Game Away From Trip To FCIAC Championship
But top running back Joey Zelkowitz injured in Saturday's 35-17 win over Warde
The Staples football team moved within one game of a trip to the FCIAC championship with a 35-17 victory over Fairfield Prep on Saturday.
Jack Massie tossed a pair of touchdown passes and also rushed for a touchown for the Wreckers, who improved to 7-0 and can clinch a berth in the FCIAC title game with a victory next week at winless Westhill.
However, it might have a costly win. According to the Connecticut Post, top running back Joey Zelkowitz left the game with a shoulder injury in the first quarter and did not return.

The comeback wasn't quite as dramatic Saturday, but Warde (4-4) still held a 17-14 at the intermission.
Short touchdown runs by Devin Lofton and David Wolff, along with Cooper Wicke's 27-yard field goal, staked the Mustangs to their lead.
Once again, the Wreckers turned things around in the third quarter. Nick Kelly's 10-yard run put Staples ahead and Massie's 9-yard keeper made it 28-17.
The Wreckers then completed their 21-0 second half on Jon Heil's 5-yard TD run.
Stamford shocked New Canaan 36-29, leaving Staples and Greenwich as the only unbeaten teams in conference play. The Cardinals visit Danbury on Thursday.
