Staples Girls Lacrosse Upsets New Milford

The 16-12 win sends the Wreckers into the quarterfinals against Immaculate on Monday

Maeve Flaherty recorded five goals and two assists Thursday, as the Staples High School girls' lacrosse team upset No. 10 seed New Milford, 16-12, in the first round of the CIAC Division II state tournament.

Blair Barone, Elizabeth Driscoll, Ali Crofts, Jesse Ambrose and Adele Mackey each had two goals for the 10th-seeded Wreckers, who improved to 14-6 and play at No.  2 seed Immaculate in the quarterfinals on Monday at 5 p.m.

Kat Krieger chipped in with one goal for Staples, which forced New Milford goalkeeper Maria Ortiz to make 18 saves. Penny Tsilfides stopped eight shots for the Wreckers.
