Three games in one week – this is what faces the Lady Wreckers this week. Game one was against Stamford and Coach Heather Driscoll expected her squad to keep up the success they had in their season opener. Staples again took control of the game early and allowed only a handful of shots on their goal compared to 32 shots taken by Staples earning a 2-0 victory.

Freshman Charlotte Rossi put Staples up 1-0 in the 15th minute. After Sophomore Elizabeth Mitas lobbed a ball into the box, Rossi calmly put the ball on her foot and punched it past the goalie. Staples forwards and midfielders took turns taking shots on the goal, but couldn’t find the net. The Staples defense again thwarted a Stamford offense that featured some talented players, but lacked the mid-field support to sustain pressure. There were few dangerous runs and Junior goalie Elizabeth Bennewitz swept up the few shots taken at her goal. The Staples defense has yet to allow a goal in two games.

In the second half, Staples was again the aggressor and after a slow start started to link up passes and crosses. Fortunately for Stamford they had a talented goalie that made some remarkable saves. She had some solid defenders in front of her who foiled a number of good scoring opportunities.

In the 65th minute, Staples was awarded a penalty just inside midfield. Junior captain Megan Root took the kick and placed it perfectly over the defensive line and found Junior Lauren Garcia racing to the far post. Garcia took a one touch and precisely placed the ball in the far net to give Staples a 2-0 lead. Staples dominated possession for the rest of the way and closed with a comfortable 2-0 win and a 2-0-0 record. They know tougher competition awaits in the potent FCIAC conference, but this is a solid start for this team with five new starters.

Staples will face a well coached Ludlowe team on Thursday at Loeffler at 4pm. Ludlowe will be looking to get back on track as they already faced three well-seasoned teams this year and have yet to earn three points. Staples will take on Bridgeport Central on Friday at home to complete a long week.
