Staples Scores and Standings: June 10

Former Staples pitcher Max Krakowiak, who recently completed his career at Fordham, was taken by the Seattle Mariners in the 48th round of the Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday.

A 2007 graduate of Staples,  the 6-3, 205-pound righthander finished his career with the Rams ranked fourth on the school's all-time list in games started (43) and ninth in innings pitched (241).

He had 14 wins at Fordham, including six complete games, and posted a 4.89 ERA.

This season, Krakowiak tied for the team lead with three complete games, while being second in wins (5) and strikeouts (61). He had a 4.23 ERA, the second-lowest of his career, in 83.0 innings pitched, holding opponents to a .255 batting average.

The Staples boys volleyball team shoots for its fifth state championship in six years when it takes on top seed Cheshire in the Class L finals on Friday at Fairfield Warde at 7 p.m.

The Wreckers' four-year reign as state championships ended in a 3-2 last year to Southington, a defeat Staples avenged in the semifinals.

Staples is looking to looking to win a state title in John Shepro's first year as head coach. Shepro replaced the highly successful Bruce Betts, who retired after last season.

Overall, Staples is seeking its ninth title. The Wreckers also won four in a row from 2001-04. The didn't win in 2005, then reeled off another four in a row from 2006-09.

-- The Staples track team will be well represented in Saturday's 66th annual New England Interscholastic outdoor track and field championships in Burlington, Vermont.

Raphael Ray qualified second in the boys 400 meter dash (48.4) while Henry Wynne qualified 11th in the 1,600 meter run (4:19.32).

Staples' Lexie Schachne qualified in a tie for third in the girls pole vault with a leap of  11-00.00.

Four Staples relay teams also will be competing in Burlington:

boys 4x800: second, 7:53.07 (Jefferson Caffery, Sean Gallagher, Kyle Hoberman, Walker Marsh,  John Roche and Henry Wynne

boys 4x400, second, 3:20.64  (Sean Gallagher, Jonathan Heil, Maxwell Hoberman, Walker Marsh, Raphael-Andre Ray and John Roche.

girls 4x800, eighth,  9:31.59 (Emily Hanrahan, Ingrid Johnson, Georgia Kursten, Courtney Mullen, Alexandra Popkin and Kristen Weiler)

girls 4x400, 12th, 4:02.13 (Emily Hanrahan, Ingrid Johnson, Courtney Mullen, Alexandra Popkin,  Tyler Scanlin and Emily Troelstra)

-- After winning his second straight Class LL tennis title, Staples' Daniel Hirschberg is entered the state Open, which begins Saturday at Hamden.

Hirschberg, who did not play in the state Open last year, faces Gavin McNulty of Darien in the first round.

Staples'doubles team of Evan Davis and Baxter Stein, also is entered and takes on Saagar Sinha and Jason Sittambalam Avon in the quarterfinals. Davis and Stein reached the quarterfinals of the Class LL doubles.
