Staples Scores and Standings: June 7

The goal of the Staples' girls lacrosse team to return to the state finals ended Monday as the Wreckers suffered an 11-7 loss to No. 5 Glastonbury in the quarterfinals of the CIAC Class L tournament.

The fourth-seeded Wreckers (14-5) appeared to recover from early deficits of 3-0 and 5-2, tying the game 6-6 at halftime.

Ali Crafts put Staples up 7-6 early in the second half, but the Tomahawks responded with five unanswered goals.  

In the semifinals on Wednesday, Glastonbury will face another FCIAC team in Fairfield Ludlowe, which knocked off top seed Wilton 14-13 in overtime.

Staples and Ridgefield will meet in the boys Class L finals on McMahon at 4:30 p.m. It's part of  a Class L doubleheader as Fairfield Prep and Simsbury clash in the second game at 6:30 p.m.

 -- Staples (38 points) finished second behind  Danbury (44 points) in the State Open team track competition  at Willowbrook Park in New Britain.

The Wreckers won the won 4 x 800 (7:53.07) and 4 x 400 relays (3:20.64) while Raphael Andre-Ray took the 400 in a time of 48,40.  Henry Wynne finished second in the 1,600 meters in 4:19.32.

Staples' Lexie Schachne was fourth in the pole vault with a leap of 11-0.

-- Staples' Daniel Hirschberg, the reigning Class LL state champion, is becoming the bagel king of Connecticut high school tennis.

He won two more matches Monday --his third and fourth in the tournament by scores of 6-0, 6-0. The senior has reached the semifinals without dropping a single game.

Presumably, he will get a bit more of a test when he faces  No. 4 Reid Risinger of Glastonbury in the semifinals on Tuesday at 3:30 at the Yale University courts.

If form holds, Hirschberg will face No. 2 seed Tyler Kratky of Greenwich in the finals on Wednesday.

Staples' Luke Foreman won his third-round match by default but then lost to No. 2 seed Tyler Kratky of Greenwich 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

In the team competion so far, Staples is still second with 20 points, two behind Greenwich.

In doubles, Staples' tandem of Jake Hirschberg and Graham Hyman advanced to the semifinals.They will face the Cheshire duo of Daniel Grove and Tyler Hajjar.

-- Staples placed third (312) in the CIAC Division I golf championship Monday at the Timberlin Golf Club,  finishing behind Ridgefield (307) and  Greenwich (311).

Staples' senior Andrew Gai carded a 74 to finish in a tie for fifth. Greenwich's
Stephen Pastore earned medalist honors with a 72.

-- The Staples' boys lacrosse team (15-4), which defeated McMahon 8-4 on Saturday, will face Ridgefield in the semifinals on Wednesday at a site and time to be determined.

-- The boys volleyball squad (17-4) faces Southington on Tuesday in the Class L semifinals at Shelton at 7 p.m.. This is a rematch of last year's state final, when Southington snapped the Wreckers' 101-match winning streak.

-- Former Australian Open champion Johan Kriek will join Jacob Kreimer of Fairfield County Tennis for an afternoon of world class instruction and drills on Saturday at the Longshore Tennis Courts in Westport.

They will be exploring "The Modern Game: The Next Level & Beyond" and “Winning Doubles Strategy & Tactics.” The event is being presented by The New Haven Open, Westport Parks & Recreation & The Player’s Edge Tennis Association.

Adults and juniors will be able to take part in the first instructional clinic session on “The Modern Game: The Next Level & Beyond” from 12:30pm-2:30pm for $75 per person or the second clinic on "Winning Doubles Strategy & Tactics" between 2:30PM-4:30PM for $75 per person.

There will be a pro-am doubles tournament following the clinics in which participants will be able to team with pros and compete in top level round robin doubles match play against Kriek and his partner as well as other area teams for prizes.

Kriek is a member of an elite group of tennis professionals who have multiple Grand Slam singles titles, having won the Australian Open in 1981 and 1982.

His all-court game and foot speed carried him to 14 singles and eight doubles titles in his 12-year career on the ATP Tour.

Kriek was ranked as high as seventh in the world at the peak of his career, recording wins over many top players, including Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, Guillermo Vilas, Nannick Noah, Andre Agassi, Michael Chang, Stan Smith, Arthur Ashe, John McEnroe, Pat Cash, Mats Wilander and Stephan Edberg.

Kreimer, a native of Brazil, brings over 40 years of tennis experience to Fairfield County Tennis. He was a ranked top junior in Brazil and the No. 1  player at Concordia College which he attended on a full tennis scholarship.

Kreimer was the head tennis pro at the Orienta Beach Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y. for eight years, responsible for comprehensive tennis programming for juniors from age four to adult. He is USPTA certified and has been a coach, club administrator and ESPN International announcer who has had the opportunity to work with such tennis greats as Martina Navratilova, Ivan Lendl and Gustavo Kuerten.

Kreimer played a lead part in winning the USTA national men’s 5.0 league championships in 1996 and has reached the finals of the national men’s 35 doubles grasscourts championships.
