The Staples boys volleyball team will play for its fifth state championship in six years after defeating No. 2 seed Southington 23-25, 25-22, 25-11, 25-17 in the Class L semifinals on Tuesday.

While the Wreckers also defeated the Blue Knights in the regular season, Tuesday's win avenged a five-set loss to Southington in last year's state final that snapped the Wreckers' 101-match winning streak. The defeat also ended Staples' four-year reign as state champions.

In Friday's final, which will be played at Fairfield Warde at 7 p.m, the third-seeded Wreckers (18-4) will face top seed Cheshire, which defeated Ridgefield in four games Tuesday in the other semifinal.

Danny Fishman had 55 saves against Southington.

-- In boys tennis, top seed Daniel Hirschberg of Staples won his second straight CIAC Class LL state championship with a 6-3, 6-2 No. 2 seed Tyler Kratky of Greenwich on Wednesday at the Yale courts.

The win enabled Staples to tie Greenwich for the team competition with 23 points.

Staples'  second-seeded tandem of Jake Hirschberg and Graham Hyman lost to top seeds John Petrini and Brandon Pomerance of Westhill 7-5, 6-0 in the doubles finals.
