The Staples' girls distance medley relay team of Ingrid Johnson, Courtney Mullen, Emily Hanrahan and Georgia Kursten finished second on Saturday in the Dan O'Grady relays with a school-record time of 12:56.90.

The Staples' boys finished first in the overall team competition with 68.33 points, beating out runnerup and host Danbury (63.50). The Wreckers' girls placed sixth with 32 points.

In the boys' competition, Dean Hefnawy tied for first in the pole vault relay with a jump of 12 feet while Alex Lochoff and Aiden McConnell tied for sixth with leaps of 11 feet. 

On the girls side, Lexie Schachne won the pole vault relay with a jump of 11 feet.

Here are Staples' other top-five finishes:

Boys

fourth, distance medley, 10:55.60

second, 4x100 medley relay, 44.57

third, 4x800 relay, 8:46.55

first, 1. 1,600 sprint medley, 3:38.75

third, 4x400 medley relay, 3:33.61

second, 4x200 medley relay, 1:32.04

Girls

third, 4x100 medley relay, 52.95

fourth, 4x400 meter relay, 4:20.78

-- Despite losing twice last week, the Staples baseball team (8-2) dropped only one spot to No.4 in this wek's New Haven Register top-10 state poll.

Pomperaug (10-1) and St. Joseph (11-0) remained one-two, followed by Branford (9-2), Staples, Torrington (11-0), Notre Dame-West Haven (8-3), Berlin (8-1), Amity (8-3), Southington (6-2) and Xavier (7-3). Torrington and Berlin were not ranked last week.
