Staples Spring Sports Gears Up for Playoffs

Wreckers baseball has already clinched the top seed for FCIACs.

Here's the outlook for Staples High School athletics over the final few days of regular season play:

Baseball  (17-1, 15-1) -- The Wreckers have clinched the top seed in the FCIAC playoffs and will host a first-round game. Final week schedule: Wednesday, Ridgefield; Friday:  at Trinity Catholic.

Softball (8-8, 8-8 ) -- The Wreckers are currently 10th in the FCIAC standings, one game out of a playoff spot with two league contests remaining.  Staples trails Trinity Catholic (9-7) ,  Norwalk (8-7) and Stamford (8-7).  However, the Wreckers host  Trinity Catholic on Friday in what could be a winner-take-all game. Final week schedule: Wednesday, at Ridgefield; Friday,  Trinity Catholic.

Boys lacrosse (15-0, 10-0) -- With  a win over Fairfield Ludlowe on Wednesday in their regular-season finale, the Wreckers could clinch the top seed for the FCIAC tournament. Final week schedule:  Wednesday, at Fairfield Ludlowe.

Girls lacrosse (8-5, 6-5) -- The Wreckers are still in the running for the FCIAC's sixth and final playoff spot, but they are one game behind Trumbull (7-4). To get in, they need to beat Norwalk on Tuesday and have Trumbull lose to Greenwich.  Final week schedule: Tuesday, at Norwalk;  Thursday, at Conard (non-league);  Saturday, St. Joseph (non-league).

Boys volleyball (15-0, 13-0) -- The Wreckers have extended their winning streak to 95 with two matches left in the regular season. Final week schedule:  Monday, at Darien; Wednesday,  Harding.

Boys tennis (13-0) -- The undefeated Wreckers have three matches left in the regular seas0n and are looking to wrap up the top seed for the FCIAC tournament. Final week schedule:  Monday, Ludlowe; Tuesday,  Bridgeport Central; Wednesday,  at McMahon.
