Staples Wreckers Upset in Semifinal Football Game

The Wreckers fall to Norwich Free Academy in the CIAC class LL state semifinal game at West Haven's Ken Strong Stadium.

 

Two undefeated teams went head-to-head in the class LL state semifinal game Sunday afternoon, but the Wreckers’ perfect season ended in a two-point loss against against Norwich Free Academy, according to CIACSports.com.

The No. 1 ranked Wreckers, led by Coach Marce Petroccio and quarterback Jack Massie, had not lost a game since 2011, but finished the 2012 season 10-1 after the heartbreaking loss.

The teams were tied 21-21 at halftime, but Connecticut’s No. 5 ranked Norwich Free Academy (12-0) pulled away and came up with a 30-28 victory.

Norwich Free Academy will face Xavier High School in the CIAC class LL state championship game at Rentschler Field in East Hartford on either Friday or Saturday. Times for specific championship games will be announced Monday, according to the CIACSports.com.
