The girls basketball team will try to cool off one of the FCIAC's hottest teams on Tuesday when the Wreckers host Wilton at 7 p.m.

The Warriors (10-2, 10-3) have won five in a row, including an impressive 58-52 victory over Trumbull, to tie the Eagles and St. Joseph for second place in the FCIAC's overall standings.

Staples is headed in the opposite direction, having lost three in a row, including a 52-40 defeat on Friday to Fairfield  Warde, which also has reeled off five straight victory.

The slide has dropped Staples (8-6, 7-5) into a five-way tie for seventh in the FCIAC with Darien, Norwalk, Stamford and Warde with six games remaining in the regular season.

The Staples boys will be on the road to face Wilton (7 p.m.), which also has gotten hot at the right time. The Warriors have won three in a  row, including Thursday's 61-39 rout of Trumbull, to improve to 6-6 a year after winning just two games.

Staples has lost two in a row, including Friday's 60-51 setback to Fairfield Warde, after winning four straight.

The Wreckers (6-6, 5-5) probably can only afford one or two more losses if they want to return to the FCIAC playoffs.

And Staples has a difficult closing schedule with games remaining against Westhill, Danbury, Greenwich and Ridgefield and Bassick, which may make Tuesday a must win for the Wreckers.
