Westport PAL 5G

The Westport PAL 5G team had an exciting weekend, beginning with a comeback run in an overtime loss to the undefeated St. Mary’s-Ridgefield team and culminating with a victory against Wilton on Sunday.

On Saturday night against St. Mary’s-Ridgefield, the girls fell down early 14-3 but tied the score late in the fourth quarter and forced overtime. With teamwork on both offense, sparked by Kayla Zaritsky, Emma Lipman and Elle Fair, and defense, led by Claudia Robinson, Madison Phelps and Ashley Wright, the girls worked well together. Sydney Panzer and Kate Rutter forced several turnovers that resulted in Westport baskets. In overtime, Gabby Bromberg won the tip but the girls eventually lost, 24-21.

On Sunday, Westport rebounded with a 25-16 victory over Wilton. Westport maintained control on offense, led by Catherine Sprouls, Kayla Zaritsky and Elle Fair, with great passing by Emma Lipman, Madison Phelps and Alexandra Sprouls. Defensively, Sydney Panzer, Ashley Wright, Gabby Bromberg and Claudia Robinson shut down the Wilton offense. Westport pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Practices and game-time experience, along with superb coaching from Andy Lipman and Johana McNelis, have given these girls confidence and momentum as they enter the home stretch.  5G travels to Shelton on Saturday before hosting Newtown 5G on Super Bowl Sunday.

Westport PAL 5B

Coach Shuan Malone has assembled a hard-working group of fifth-graders who find themselves in fourth place in the Fairfield County Basketball League’s Boys 5 A division. In their first season of travel basketball, players David Basich, Sam Baxt, Benjamin Goldstein, Dylan Honig, Cameron Lynch, Austin Sholes, Matthew Tanzer, Evan Vishno, Dylan Ward and Brian Wilk are playing together and improving every week.

This Saturday, Westport PAL 5B will host Southbury before traveling to meet the Greenwich Flame 5B on Sunday.

Westport PAL 6

This weekend, Westport PAL 6G plays three games, starting with a trip to face Brookfield 6G on Friday evening, followed by back-to-back games with Wilton 6G. The team hosts Wilton on Saturday and will travel to Wilton on Super Bowl Sunday.

Westport PAL 6B

Coach Charles Connor has been working hard with the Westport PAL 6B team this season. Brandon Adrian, Jack Beck, Zach Feinstein, Steven Frost, Harris Levi, Brandon Luffman, Benjamin Pearl, Ryan T. Quinn, Drew Rogers, Benjamin Stein and Evan Zinn have improved significantly as the team sports a 9-6 record in the FCBL’s Boys 6 B Division.

Westport PAL 6B faces its busiest weekend of the season with four games, starting on Thursday in Bridgeport to play Kings Kids 6B. On Friday, 6B stays on the road, traveling to play the Greenwich Flame 6B. On Saturday, the weekend odyssey takes the team to Ridgefield. And on Super Bowl Sunday, the team will be on the road once more to play New Fairfield 6B.

Westport PAL 7G

Westport PAL 7G continued its pattern of strong wins and tough losses this past weekend. Last Friday, the team had its strongest effort of the season in defeating Trumbull 7G. The momentum was short-lived, however, as Westport played a strong game but was defeated on Saturday by division leading and undefeated Greenwich Boys & Girls Club 7G.

Strong efforts were put forth all weekend by Julia Brower, Virginia Gehrig, Amelia Hunt, Grace McGinley, Claire Meehan, Morgan McWhirter Charlotte Rossi and Rachel Seideman. In her first game action, Ashley Constantino shined at point guard as Olivia Troy was sidelined with an injury.

Westport PAL 7G has three big upcoming games. In a rare weekday game, 7G will travel to Shelton this Thursday for the makeup of a previously snowed out game with Shelton 7G. On Friday, Westport will host Monroe 7G and on Sunday the team will travel to meet Fairfield PAL Storm 7G.

Westport PAL 7B

The Westport PAL 7B basketball team split its games last weekend to remain in the thick of the Fairfield County Basketball League's Boys 7 A division at 11-6 (6-2 in division).

On Friday night, Westport PAL 7B lost 58-48 to Fairfield Red, the top ranked team in the division. The game was a seesaw battle in the first half, with each team inching ahead but unable to hold the lead. In the second half, however, Fairfield’s talented 3-point shooters took over, grabbing and then building a lead that Fairfield never relinquished.

For Westport, the loss was disappointing but didn’t obscure the strong efforts from leading scorers Mack Muller and Justin Seideman with solid efforts from Kenny Brill, Ben Casparius, Ryan Fitton, Sean Pritchett and Fritz Schemel. Westport’s depth was also on display with offensive and defensive contributions from Brendan Massoud, Matty Fair and Cayne Mandell.

Westport PAL 7B bounced back on Sunday evening, handily defeating a long-range shooting New Milford squad, 72-47. All players contributed at both ends of the floor. The team recorded its highest point total of the year with four of nine players scoring in double figures.

Leading scorers were Ben Casparius, Mack Muller, Sean Pritchett, Kenny Brill and Fritz Schemel. Assists and steals were led by Justin Seideman, Brill, Matty Fair and Cayne Mandell. Excellent rebounding by Muller, Casparius, Ryan Fitton and Fair added to the win.

Westport PAL 7B looks for revenge against Fairfield Red this Friday, at 7 pm at Bedford Middle School before traveling to Ridgefield to meet St. Mary’s on Super Bowl Sunday.

Westport PAL 8G

Westport PAL 8G continues to play hard for Coach Chris Scholz in the FCBL’s Girls 8 B division. Callie Bartimer, Julia Bartimer, Talia Hendel, Helena Leskow, Jenna Levantin, Nicole Lynch, Gabrielle Perry, Emily Rogers, Blake Rubin, Ayden Schattman and Claire Yin are hoping that the tough early season battles have them poised for a winning streak to lead them into the playoffs.

Westport PAL 8G will put that theory to the test this weekend when it hosts Stamford 8G on Friday, then travels to play Shelton 8G on Saturday.

Westport PAL 8B

Coach Glenn O’Neill’s Westport 8B team is competing hard in the FCBL’s Boys A division. Ryan Angerthal, Daniel Brill, Dylan Dreyfuss, John Fincher, Adam Friedman, Riley Petta, Noah Staffa, Ben Thaw, Jared Vishno, Jackson Ward and Jack Zapfel play multiple offensive and defensive schemes and look to confuse and overwhelm opponents.

Westport 8B will host Ridgefield 8B on Friday evening, followed by an away game at Newtown 8B on Sunday.
