Former Staples star Danny Hirschberg finally met his match.
Fairfield's Nolan Paige, a rising senior at the Hopkins School in New Haven, cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Hirschberg in the U-18 finals in the USTA New England junior section championships Thursday at the Yale courts.

According to Tennis Recruiting Network, Paige, who also plays on the Hopkins' basketball team, is ranked No. 1 in New England and 14th nationally in his age group.
On Thursday, he beat the top high school player in the state as Hirschberg is the reigning Class LL and state Open champion.

For the second time in as many matches, Paige, who also won their tournament last year, beat an incoming freshman at Brown. In the semifinals, he survived a pair of tiebreakers to defeat No. 6 seed William Spector, who will be Hirschberg's teammate at Brown in the fall.
Hirschberg, the No. 7 seed, reached the final by rallying for a 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (3) win over top seed Alexander Steinroeder of Concord, Mass.

In Thursday's only game, Trumbull American defeated North End 10-0 at Bridgeport's Blackham Field.
Westport is back in action on Saturday against Trumbull National (11 a.m., Blackham 1).
