The Beachside Soccer Club's U-12 team has advanced to the semifinals of the Region 1 U.S. Youth Soccer Region I tournament being played this weekend in Lancaster, Pa.

The U-12 team, coached Mark Alves, completed pool play 1-0-2 after battling Holmdel NJX of New Jersey to a 1-1 draw on Sunday. Beachside will play the Bayside Bolts from Rhode Island in the semifinals on Monday.

Beachside also had teams to the tournament in the U-15, U-16 and U-17 divisions, but none of those clubs, which featured players from Staples High School, were able to advance to the semifinals.

The U-15 and U-16 teams tied for first place in their groups with 2-1 records in round robin play but lost out on tiebreakers. The U-17 team went 1-2 in the preliminary round.

The 15s defeated Beach FC Red of Virginia 3-2 on Saturday to improve 2-0, but lost to the Arsenal Gunners of Pennsylvania 2-1 on Sunday. Andrew Melitsanopoulos scored the goal for Beachside.

The 16s closed with a 1-0 win over the Pachuca Dragons of Maryland on Sunday after falling 3-1 to PDA Harkes of New Jersey on Saturday.

The under-17 team concluded pool play Sunday with a 3-1 setback to Penn Fushion Celtic of Pennsylvania. That followed a 3-2 loss to Black Watch of New York on Saturday.

Wreckers' Dylan Evans and Ben Root played on the U-17 team, Aaron Liu, Jake Malowitz and Taylor McNair were on the U-16 side and Diego Alanis and Harry Birch suited up for the U-15 squad

-- With one game remaining in pool play, Westport (2-2) is battling Trumbull National (2-2) for the final spot in the double elimination playoff round in the District Two 12-year-old Little League tournament.

Fairfield American, Fairfield National and Trumbull American clinched spots in the playoff round with wins on Saturday.

Each improved to 4-0 in pool play as Fairfield American routed Park City 19-0 in four innings, Fairfield National defeated North End 11-1 in 3 1/2 innings and Trumbull American blanked Monroe 11-0 in 3 1/2 innings.

Kyle DeWalt drove in three runs as Westport stayed alive with a 10-4 victory over Trumbull Natiional.  In Saturday's other game, Easton downed Stratford 10-4 in a battle of teams out of playoff contention.

Trumbull National and Westport are fighting for the second and final playoff spot in the Red group behind Fairfield National.

Fairfield American and Trumbull American will meet on Tuesday to decide the Blue group winner (Blackham 2, 5:30 p.m.), although both will advance to the double elimination playoffs.

No games are scheduled for Sunday while Monday - July 4 - also is an off day.

Pool play continues on Tuesday with two games scheduled. Westport faces North End in the other contest (Blackham 1, 5:30 p.m.).

By virtue of its win on Saturday, Westport holds the tiebreaker edge and can clinch a playoff spot simply by defeating North End.

Should Westport lose, it would then need Trumbull National to drop its final game in pool play against Park City on Thursday.

-- Staples will have three players suiting up in Friday's 15th annual Hall of Fame Football Classic at West Haven's Ken Strong Stadium (7:30 p.m.)  

Representing the Wreckes the contest that matches graduated high school seniors from Fairfield County against graduated seniors from New Haven County will be Pat Murray, Chris Coyne and Jason Mawicke.

New Haven leads the series, 10-4.

The game is presented by the Ralph Desantis Fairfield County and the Gene Casey New Haven County Chapters of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. Tickets are $ 7 each and will be available at the gate.
