The four playoff teams have been determined for the District Two 12-year-old Little League tournament.  Fairfield American and Fairfield National are top seed and Trumbull American are No. 2 seeds.

Fairfield American and Fairfield National each went 5-0 in pool play and could be headed to a showdon in the final, when a berth in the sectionals will be on the line.

On Monday,  Fairfield American takes on Westport and Fairfield National meets Trumbull American as the double elimination playoff round begins. Both games are at Blackham at 5:30 p.m.

Westport National clinched a playoff berth with an 11-1 win over North End on Tuesday in a game called after 3 1/2 innings because of the mercy rule.

Ryan Fitton went 3-for-3 with two home runs and drove in three runs for Westport on Tuesday.

Trumbull National can match Westport's 3-2 record in pool play with a win over over Park City on Thursday, but Westport won a tiebreaker based a 10-4 win over Trumbull National on Sunday.

The Beachside Soccer Club's U-12 team defeated Holmdel of New Jersey on penalty kicks Tuesday morning in the finals of the U.S. Youth Soccer Region I championship in Lancaster, Pa.

After regulation and two overtime periods ended in a scoreless tie, Beachside outscored Holmdel NJX 5-4 on penalty kicks to advance to the nationals, which will take place in Phoenix from July 27-31.

Beachside had advanced to the Region I finals with a 3-0 victory over the Bayside Bolts of Rhode Island on Monday. Fairfield's Julio Cesar Palencia, Ridgefield's Benjamin Mines and Westport's Joe Pravder scored the goals.

Beachside also had boys teams in the regionals in the U-15, U-16 and U-17 divisions, but none made it past pool play.

The U-12 team is comprised of players from throughout the region, including Norwalk, Fairfield, Westport, Ridgefield and Trumbull.

Alexander Hedegaard led Beachside in the tournament with two goals.

Beachside's roster also included Tyler Dalton, George Kutrubis, Alex Carbonnier, Jon Paul Fernandez, Sawyer Kindel, Ben McNamara, Oscar Pereira, Dylan Middlebrook, William Trudeau, Thomas Nealon, James Roland, Ryan Ruff and Charlie Teeters.

-- Wesport natives Giles Goodburn and Bennett Dubson will be amongMore than 1,300 athletes representing nearly 20 countries and 40 states who will compete in the 2011 Amica Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island on Sunday.

The fourth-annual event consists of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run.

Participants – both amateurs and professionals ranging in age from 18 to 74 – will travel from as far away as Chile, the U.K., Hong Kong and Australia to compete in this unique event, which will showcase Blackstone Valley, Providence and its surrounding communities. More than 100 athletes from Rhode Island are also expected to participate.

A professional field consisting of some of the sport’s top contenders will vie for the title, including Viktor Zyemtsev, Tim Berkel, Philip Graves, Magali Tisseyre and Amanda Stevens, among others. The race offers a professional prize purse of $15,000 and 50 coveted age group qualifying slots to the 2011 Marine Corps Ironman World Championship 70.3, taking place on Sept. 11 at Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nev.

The 33rd annnual Point to Point Swim begins Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. at Compo Beach in Westport. Registration is $35 ($45 on race day).

The one-mile open water swim race will include three heats with up to 75 swimmers per heat.

All proceeds benefit the Westport Weston Family Y’s Strong Kids Campaign, which programs and services to those the community who cannot afford them.
