It's unfortunate that perennial state powers Farmington and Staples would have to meet so early in the tournament but the Wreckers have a relatively low seed.
In each of the past two seasons, they were the No. 5 seed. Staples won its most recent state championship in 2009 with a 4-0 win over New Milford in the finals.
The Staples girls soccer team (8-5-3), which was edged out of the final spot in the FCIAC playoffs, is the No. 22 seed and will play at No. 13 New Milford (10-4-2) in the first round of the Class LL tournament on Thursday (2 p.m.)
If the Wreckers spring the upset, they could be looking at date with defending state champion Shelton in the second round on Saturday. Shelton hosts another FCIAC team -- Fairfield Ludlowe - on Thursday.
The Staples field hockey team (11-3-3-1), which ended Darien's 93-game unbeaten streak en route to its first FCIAC championship since 1994, is the No. 9 seed. The Wreckers play at No. 8 Hall (10-5-0-0) in the first round of the Class L tourney on Friday (2 p.m.)
If the Wreckers advance, they would see top seed Cheshire in the quarterfinals on Monday. The Rams open with the winner of the qualifying game between South Windsor and Fairfield Ludlowe.
The Staples girls volleyball squad, which lost to Darien in the FCIAC finals on Saturday, has a bye in the first round of the Class LL state tournament and will host the Trumbull-New Canaan winner on Saturday night (7 p.m.)
Three Westport teams have advanced in the Fairfield County Football League playoffs. Because of last week's postponements, quarterfinal games in each age bracket will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday to complete the playoffs before Thanksgiving. Semifinal games are set for this weekend with the finals scheduled for next weekend.
