Fairfield Prep's Connor Rog and Fairfield Warde's Harry Warnick, who finished one-two in the state Open cross county race last week, also excelled Saturday.

Rog finished second overall with a time of 15:27 - just one second behind winner Mike Marsella of Chairho, R.I. - to help the Jesuits place second in the team competition. Warnick (15:43) was close behind in fourth.

Fairfield Prep, which captured the state Open title last Tuesday, finished behind only Bishop Hendricken (RI) on Saturday in the team competition. Chairho (RI), Amity and Bishop Guertin (NH) completed the top five.

Staples' Mikolaj Kulis finished 70th with a time of 16:52.

Ideally, it would have been later in the tournament, but the Staples and Farmington are set to meet in a rematch of last year's Class LL championship game.

The contest between the sixth-seeded Indians and 11th-seeded Wreckers will be played at 5 p.m. at Tunxis Mead in Farmington. Last year, the Indians denied the Wreckers a 13th state championship with a 2-1 victory.

Staples (13-3-4) needed overtime in the first round to get past Manchester 1-0 while Farmington defeated New Britain by the same score.

Eight FCIAC teams have reached the second round of the state tournament: No. 3 Norwalk, No. 7 Trumbull, No. 11 Staples, No. 17 Greenwich and No. 19 Westhill in Class LL and 5 Darien, No. 12 New Canaan and No. 16 have advanced in Class L.

There are two head-to-head matchups Monday as Norwalk hosts Westhill Darien entertains New Canaan for spots in the final eight.

Also Monday, Staples' field hockey team visits top seed Cheshire in the quarterfinals of the Class LL tournament. The winner gets No. 5 Hamden or No. 20 Greenwich in the semifinals on Wednesday.
