Staples (12-2-4)  defeated New Canaan 1-0 on penalty kicks (3-2 penalty kicks) to reach the title game. Trumbull advanced with a 3-1 win over No. 3 seed Darien.

Max Hoberman, Ben Root and  Steve Smith converted their penalty kicks, giving Staples a shot at its 28th FCIAC title and fourth in a row.

In the history of the FCIAC, that feat has been accomplished only twice, both by Staples, which won six in a row from 1970-75 under the late Albie Loeffler and five consecutive from 1977-81.

Staples defeated Stamford 3-1 (25-13, 25-18, 23-25, 25-19) in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC girls volleyball playoffs Thursday.

Dani  Kosinski had 46 assists, Anna Link 14 kills and Augustine Gradoux-Matt 13 kills for the Wreckers (17-2), who will face No. 2 seed Ridgefield in the semifinals on Friday at Fairfield Ludlowe at 5 p.m.

Darien and New Canaan meet in the second semifinal at 7 p.m. at Ludlowe.

Now in the driver's seat for a trip to the FCIAC championship, the Staples football team hosts Fairfield Warde on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Last week, the Wreckers improved to 6-0, exploding for 28 unanswered points in the third quarter to defeat Darien 42-23 in a battle of unbeatens.

Joey Zelkowitz rushed for nearly 200 yards in the snow, including a pair of 65-yard TD runs for Staples, which is on course to meet New Canaan in the Nov. 18 FCIAC title game at Trumbull's McDougall Stadium.

The Wreckers can get there with wins over Warde on Saturday and next week against winless Westhill.

Warde (4-3) is looking for a winning season under third-year coach Duncan Della Volpe and moved over .500 last week with a 28-6 victory over St. Josepph.

Even if the Mustangs can't knock off the Wreckers, a 6-4 record is still within reach as they finish with Wilton and winless Fairfield Ludlowe.

The Wreckers have to contend with Warde's powerful running back Devin Lofton, who has had two games over 200 yards this season.

The CIAC announcing Thursday it has postponed the start of its state tournaments to allow  extra time for conferences to complete their own playoff tournaments.

State tournaments in soccer, field hockey, volleyball and swimming, scheduled to start on Monday, now will be begin Thursday. Pairings will be announced Wednesday.

Volleyball and field hockey state championship games now will take place Nov. 18-19. Girls and boys soccer championship games will be played the following weekend.
