Staples' junior Henry Wynne finished third Tuesday in the state Open cross country meet at Madison's Hammonasset State Park.

Wynne posted a time of 15:50, finishing behind winner Connor Rog of Fairfield Prep (15:22) and Harry Warnick of Fairfield Warde (15:35).

Wynne was one second better than Naugatuck's Muad Hrezi while Newtown's Jake Feinstein (15:58) completed the top five.

Rog helped Fairfield Prep capture the team title with a total of 109 points, well ahead of runner-up Xavier's mark of 150. Danbury (155) placed third, followed by Amity (157), Darien (170), Norwich Free Academy (186), Staples (193), Newtown (209), Conard (223) and New Milford (224).

The Wreckers; other top finisher was Mikolaj Kulis, who was 15th with a time of 16:18. Marcus Russi placed 62nd (17:07) and  Patrick Nolan was 89th (17:28).

The meet originally was scheduled for Friday at Manchester's Wickham Park was postponed. The location was moved because Wickham Park suffered damage in the recent snowstorm.

Tuesday's results do not include finishers from the Class SS race who will
be merged in to the final official results. Those results will be posted by the CIAC later in the week

The Staples football team can clinch a spot in the FCIAC championship game with a win at winless Westhill on Saturday.

Even if the Wreckers (7-0 FCIAC), who will be without top rusher Joey Zelkowitz (shoulder separation), somehow lose to the Vikings, they still might have enough bonus points to qualify.

The biggest benefactor from New Canaan's 36-29 loss to Stamford on Saturday -- the Rams' first defeat against the Black Knights since 1971 - was Greenwich.

The Cardinals climbed to second in the FCIAC rankings and can clinch a berth in the title game with a win at Danbury on Thursday.

Since the Cardinals play early, they would have luxury of sitting back and awaiting their opponent (probably Staples).

If Greenwich losses, New Canaan could slide back in with a win over Trumbull (2-4). The health of quarterback Matt Milano could be a concern after he suffered an apparent concussion against Stamford.

However, Rams coach Lou Marinelli told the Stamford Advocate on Saturday night that Milano had a migrane headache and should be okay.

Here are the rankings after the weekend:

1. Staples (7-0) 131.3

2. Greenwich (7-0) 122.5

3. New Canaan (7-1) 115.6

4. Norwalk (6-1) 112.5

5. Darien (7-1) 110.0

All five have a mathematical shot, but Norwalk needs losses by Greenwich and New Canaan and Darien needs losses by Greenwich, New Canaan and Norwalk.

Three Westport teams have advanced in the Fairfield County Football League playoffs.
