The Staples boys soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday.
Eliot Helgan sscored the game's only goal early in the first half as Darien continued its surprising start under first-year coach Jon Bradley with a 1-0 victory over the defending three-time FCIAC champion Wreckers.

According to the Staples' website, it was the Blue Wave's first win over the 27-time FCIAC champions since 1997. Over the years, Staples has dominated Darien with a 36-5-1 lead in the all-time series that began in 1965.
With Thursday's win, Darien improved to 8-1-2, good for an FCIAC-best 26 points, three more than Staples, which suffered its first loss of the season Thursday and dropped to 7-1-2.

The Wreckers pressed for the equalizer, but couldn't convert three corner kicks in the final minutes.
"We actually played very, very well — perhaps our best possession, and some of our most team-oriented defense of the year,” Staples coach Dan Woog said. "What we lacked was someone who could snipe in a goal. Darien got theirs, and we didn’t — that was the difference today."
James Hickok made nine saves for the Wreckers and Jack Fisher stopped seven shots for Darien.
After last week's bye week, the Staples football team swings back into action on Saturday when the Wreckers host Danbury in a 2 p.m. kickoff.
Staples (3-0) is still undefeated, thanks to a dramatic comeback against against McMahon in its last game on Oct. 1. In that game, the Wreckers rallied from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to stun the Senators 24-21 on Robby Wolf's 19-yard field goal with three seconds remaining.
Danbury enters the contest a 2-2 after playing undefeated Darien tough in a 24-21 loss last week.
James Harrington scored all three touchdowns for the Hatters and has seven in the last two weeks. He found the end zone four times in Danbury's 44-8 win over Bridgeport Central on Oct. 1.
The Staples boys soccer team will be honored as Westport's Sports Persons of the Year at the Fairfield County Sports Commission's seventh annual Sports Night awards dinner.
In addition, the late Albie Loeffler, who founded the Wreckers' storied program, will be inducted into the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame.
The dinner is set for Monday at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich at 6 p.m., and tickets are still available at $125 apiece.
Last season, the Wreckers won their third consecutive FCIAC title - and 27th in program history. They fell just short of a second consecutive state championship, falling to Farmington 2-1 in the CIAC Class LL finals. Staples finished the season with a 20-3-1 record.
Four members of last year's team are playing college soccer this fall: Brendan Lesch (Notre Dame), Frankie Bergonzi (Colgate), Greg Gudis (Columbia) and Sean Gallagher (Navy).
WTNH-Channel 8 sports director Noah Finz, a Greenwich resident, is the emcee for the evening. The newest members of the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame and 15 Sports Persons of the Year from county communities will be recognized.
Sports personalities slated to attend are former Yankees pitcher Tommy John, ex-NY Giants football player Bob Hyland, Lowes Moore, who played with the New Jersey Nets, former world boxing champion Travis Simms and Wes Matthews, a two-time NBA champion with the LA Lakers.
