The Staples girls soccer team climbed back into an FCIAC playoff spot Thursday following a 5-0 win over Trinity Catholic.
Abby Fagan scored two goals and Abbey Lake, Ryan Kirshner and Jessie Ambrose each added one for the Wreckers, who improved to 6-4-2.
With 20 points, Staples jumped ahead of Fairfield Ludlowe (6-6-1), which remained stuck at 19 points following a 1-0 loss to Danbury on Thursday.
Staples has four games remaining, starting with a tough test at New Canaan on Saturday at 10 a.m. In an odd scheduling quirk, all the Wreckers' remaining contests are on the road.
Next week, Staples has games at Wilton (Monday), McMahon (Tuesday) and Stamford (Thursday).
Friday's visit to McDougall Stadium is sure to be an emotional one for Staples football coach Marce Petroccio.
A Trumbull graduate, Petroccio played on Jerry McDougall's first state championship team in 1978 and had been extremely close with the legendary former Trumbull coach who passed away last week. This will be the Eagles' first home game since McDougall's death at the age of 76.
Staples enters the contest with a 4-0 record after last week's 31-12 victory over Danbury and is looking ahead to next week's showdown against Darien (5-0), so the Wreckers will try not to look past the Eagles, who could be an angry and desperate team after back-to-back losses to Greenwich and Darien.
Don Cherry rushed for 100 yards last week for the Eagles, but they could not find the end zone against the Blue Wave and suffered a 21-0 defeat.
Nick Kelly rushed for a pair of touchdowns and Joey Zelkowitz ran for 110 yards for Staples, which built a 21-0 lead against Danbury. The Wreckers are allowing only 12 points per game, tied with Darien for the FCIAC's best mark.
