The Staples girls soccer team held up its part of the bargain on Tuesday.

Abbey Lake scored a hat trick and Turner Block added a goal as the Wreckers dispatched McMahon 4-1 to keep their FCIAC playoff hopes alive.

Staples, which was coming off Monday's 1-1 tie at Wilton, improved to 7-5-3 heading into Thursday's regular-season finale at Stamford (4 p.m.)

Staples took control of Tuesday's contest after Lake opened the scoring six minutes into the game. Lake scored again in the 27th minute to make it 2-0.

In the second half, Block headed in Alex Wiener's corner kick for a 3-0 cushion.

Lake then complete her hat trick before the Senators (5-10-0) tallied a late goal to avoid the shutout.

In other FCIAC action, Wilton routed Bridgeport Central 8-1 on Tuesday to become the fifth team to clinch a spot in the playoffs, joining St. Joseph, Westhill, New Canaan and Greenwich.

That leaves Darien (8-4-3, 27 points), Fairfield Warde (8-5-2, 26 points), Trumbull (7-3-5, 26 points) and Staples (24 points) battling for the final three spots.

On Thursday, Darien hosts Wilton, Fairfield Warde entertains Trinity Catholic and Trumbull is home for Westhill. With a three-point lead over Staples, Darien needs only a tie to clinch a playoff spot.

This is what it comes down to for the Wreckers -- they need a win and one of the three teams ahead of them to lose.

Staples owns the tiebreaker against Darien based on a 4-0 victory over the Blue Wave on Oct. 14.

If the Blue Wave gets at least one point at home against Wilton, then the Wreckers have to root for the Stamford schools.

A Trinity Catholic victory over Warde seems unlikely since the Crusaders are 1-13-0. However, Trumbull has a difficult assignment against Westhill, which is 11-1-3 and holds the No. 2 seed.

All might not be lost for the Wreckers. Of course, first they have to beat Stamford, which is only 3-12-0 and has dropped seven of its last eight games.

Saturday's battle of football unbeatens between Darien (6-0) and Staples (5-0) will be televised on Monday at 7:30 p.m. across all regions on MSG Varsity, Cablevision’s iO TV, Channel 14. The contest gets under way early with a 10:30 a.m. kickoff at Staples.

Darien is ranked third in the latest FCIAC standings with 118.3 points, behind New Canaan (123.3) and Staples (118.3). Greenwich, the other team still unbeaten in conference play, is fourth, with 116.0 points.

The FCIAC uses a points formula similiar to the CIAC's system to determine the state playoff participants. Teams receive 100 points for each win and 10 bonus points for every victory achieved by an opponent it has defeated.

Because of the bonus points involved, the winner of Saturday's contest figures to have the inside track to the FCIAC championship Nov. 18 at Trumbull's McDougall Stadium.

Gunning for a fourth consecutive FCIAC championship, the Staples boys soccer team hosts winless Harding (0-14-0) on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in its regular-season finale.

The Wreckers (9-2-4) figure to be the No. 4 seed for the FCIAC playoffs as they are three points behind Trumbull (10-1-4), which visits Trinity Catholic (1-12-1) on Wednesday.

Norwalk (13-1-1, 40 points ) clinched the top seed for the second straight year with a 4-2 win over New Canaan on Monday.

Darien (11-2-3) holds the No. 2 spot, but has completed its regular season - the Blue Wave battled Trumbull to a 1-1 tie Monday -- and will fall to No. 3 if Trumbull wins at Trinity Catholic.

Staples is coming off a 2-2 tie against Danbury on Monday.  The FCIAC quarterfinals are set for Friday.
