The Staples football team, which lost to Glastonbury 7-6 in the quarterfinals of the CIAC Class LL state playoffs last season, is ranked seventh in the preseason Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance preseason poll, which was released Tuesday night.

The Wreckers (9-2) , whose two defeats last year came by a combined three points, were not ranked at the end of last season.

Xavier (13-0), the No. 1 team last season, edged Masuk (13-0) by one point -- 434-433 - for the top spot in the preseason poll.

Masuk, which ended New Canaan's four-year state title reign in the Class L finals last year, is led by UConn-bound quarterback Casey Cochran.

Xavier and Masuk each collected 15 of the 30 first-place votes. New Canaan, which is seeking a sixth consecutive trip to the state finals,  is ranked third.

The only other FCIAC team in the preseason poll is Trumbull (11-2) at No. 6. The Eagles finished last season ranked fifth after losing to Xavier in the CIAC Class LL state championship game.

St. Joseph (10-3), the two-time defending Class S state champion, did not make the top 10 as the Cadets return only two starters and appear to be facing a rebuilding season.

TUESDAY'S RESULTS

Girls soccer

Staples 3, Fairfield Ludlowe 1--Abbey Lake, Adele Mackey and Abby  Fagan scored for the Wreckers.

Just over 34 minutes into the match, Fagan boomed a right-footed bomb from 25 yards out that sailed inside the upper right post for a 1-0 halftime lead.

The second score for Staples came off a nice pass from Fagan, who pushed the ball down to Mackay. She crossed the ball to a perfectly positioned senior Lake, who one touched the cross into the goal to make it 2-0.

A few minutes later, Turner Block created an opportunity with her speed, deep in the left corner and fed a cross to Mackay, who confidently lazer headed the ball into the net for Staples' third goal. The Falcons scored a late goal to spoil the shutout bid.

Field hockey

Wilton 3, Staples 0 -- Chris  Lueb made six saves for the Wreckers
