The Staples boys soccer team finally opened its season Friday, posting a 1-0 victory at St. Joseph.
The Wreckers were supposed to open on Wednesday against Ridgefield, but that game was postponed because the Tigers didn't get in enough practices. Ridgefield High School was closed for a week following Hurricane Irene and the team couldn't practice while the school was shut. Staples also had two preseason scrimmages cancelled because of rain.

The Wreckers scored the only goal they needed against St. Joseph in the 34th minute.
Terrence Gibbons pounced on Dylan Hoy's free kick in the box and headed it into the net for the Wreckers' first goal of the season.

Staples out-shot the Cadets 17-5 and attempted the game's only three corner kicks.
