In each of the 15 communities, a committee headed by a local town representative of the Commission, selected a Sports Person of the Year. Each winner was deemed to have had the most positive impact in their sports community from Aug. 2010-Aug. 2011.

The winner from Westport is the Wreckers' boys soccer team, which reached the CIAC Class LL state final after winning the state championship the previous year.

Four members of that team are playing college soccer this fall, including Brendan Lesch, who is at Notre Dame. In addition, Frankie Bergonzi is at Colgate, Sean Gallagher is at Navy and Greg Gudis is at Columbia.

The Wreckers were denied their 13th state championship in school history with a 2-1 loss to Farmington in Class LL finals.

The Westport Cardinals (7-11) will play in the Presidents Cup playoffs in the Fairfield County Senior Men's Baseball League. The Presidents Cup is for teams who finish fifth through eighth in the regular season.

Westport will play in the first round of the playoffs on Sunday at 9 a.m. against an opponent to be determined.

The Monroe Top Hats (14-2) won the regular-season title, finishing one game ahead of the Fairfield Mariners (13-3).

The top four teams advanced to the top pier playoffs while the fifth- through eighth-place teams vie for the Presidents Cup.

The Bridgeport Brewers (9-8) are currently third, followed by the Trumbull Titans (8-6). The New Canaan Cannons (8-9) are fifth and the Stamford Phillies (7-8) are sixth.

In play-in games on Saturday, the Phillies face the Brewers and the Cannons take on the Titans. The playoff matchups will be determined after those games are completed.
