Westport Basketball Association travel basketball teams earned top level seeds in the recent Fairfield County Basketball League tournaments. The FCBL is a 250 team league, including travel teams from every town within Fairfield County, and about two dozen teams from beyond the county’s borders (see FCBLhoops.org).
After three month of regular season play that starts in December, the FCBL splits each boys and girls grade into tournament pools of peer groups. Three Westport PAL teams received bids into the league’s highest level tournament pools for their grade. All three teams lost in the semi-finals round to the ultimate tournament champions.
The seventh grade boys team received the No. 5 seed (out of 42 teams), and got knocked out by Fairfield. The sixth grade girls team earned the No. 5 seed (out of 26 teams), losing to Newtown. The fifth grade girls team earned the No. 6 seed (out of 17 teams), also losing to Newtown in the semifinals.

The next event in the Connecticut Challenge Speaker Series features a talk by Sean Swarner, a two-time cancer survivor, mountain climber, and author of Keep Climbing: How I Beat Cancer and Reached the Top of the World.
Swarner shares his inspirational life story Thursday, April 12 at Roger Ludlowe Middle School at 7:30 PM. The event is free to the public and made possible in part with support from People’s United Bank. Registration is required at www.CTChallenge.org/keepclimbing.
Swarner, who was named the 2007 Jimmy V Foundation’s Don’t Ever Give Up Award winner for his courage, will take you on his life’s journey through a dynamic audiovisual presentation, that is not only inspiring, but offers a message of hope that taps into that motivational adrenaline rush that runs through all of us. The presentation will include his climb up the 29,035-foot giant that is Mount Everest, surviving hurricane-force winds and crossing crevasses thousands of feet deep on rickety aluminum ladders. Swarner will offer insight into the grueling journey of his youth and his fight for survival in overcoming two bouts with cancer. Finally, you will trek with Sean to the highest peaks in Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.
Prior to the event, a special reception and flag signing for cancer survivors will be held at 6:30 pm. Swarner will carry the flag up Mt. Kilimanjaro this July and plant it at the summit. Following the event, Swarner will sign copies of his book, Keep Climbing. A limited quantity will be available for purchase or you may bring your own copy for him to sign.
Additional support for this program provided by BMW of Bridgeport and Aetna.
