junior Henry Wynne finished first Friday in the 1,000-meter at the New England indoor track and field championships with a time 2:28.30.
Connecticut finished in the top three as Sheehan Thomas Lupoli was second (2:30.39) and Wolcott's Joseph Gioielli placed third (2:30.62).

Wynne was one of two winners from the FCIAC as Fairfield Warde's Harry Warnick won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:20.22.
In addition, Staples' quartet of Max Hoberman, Walker Marsh, Wynne and Jon Heil won the 4x400 relay and set a school record with a time of 3:23.62.

The Wreckers' 4x200 relay team of Hoberman, David Hoffman, Zachary Mitchell, and Heil finished sixth second and established another school mark by 0.02 seconds.

Staples junior Nathaniel Boley was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Swimmer at the FCIAC championships after winning the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.
His time of 51.84 seconds in the backstroke set an FCIAC championship record.

Staples' Mikell Washington went 1-2 in the 195-pound division this past weekend at the New England wrestling championships in Providence.
Washington lost his first match, then won one bout in the wrestlebacks before he was eliminated.

Despite a 10-game losing streak, the Staples-Weston-Shelton boys hockey team recovered in time to qualify for postseason play and is the No. 10 seed in the Division II state tournament.
The Wreckers, who their final three games to finish at 9-11 after getting many of their walking wounded back, will play at No. 7 seed Branford (11-9) in the first round on Tuesday. The contest is set for 7 p.m. at the Northford Pavilion.
Should Staples advance, it would take on either on No. 2 seed Hand (12-6-2) in the quarterfinals. Hand earned a bye in the first round.
Guilford (11-7-2) is the top seed while North Branford (11-8-1) in the No. 3 seed and Wilton (10-10) the No. 4 seed
The Wreckers moved up to Division II after losing to Watertown-Pomperaug 4-0 in last year's Division III state final.
Staples started this season 6-1 before the injury bug hit. During the losing streak, the Wreckers dressed as few as 10 skaters for some games.
