Whiz Kid: Quinn Mendelson

An interview with the Staples sophomore defenseman on the varsity lacrosse team.

What are some of your hobbies off the field?

Off the field, I like to hang out with my friends and family. I also love the outdoors, and have always enjoyed different kinds of music

I started to play lacrosse when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade. At that point I was still living in Santa Monica, California where lacrosse was not a well known sport at all.

What initially sparked your interest in the sport?

My interest in lacrosse comes from being around it as I've grown up. My dad, Steven, played in High school in Ardsley, New York and my brother has always been playing. One of my favorite experiences is having had the chance to be on the same team as him last year when he was a senior.

What do you most enjoy about the game of lacrosse?

I love the pace of the game and how every player does everything differently. Also, the game was originally played by Native Americans, so it's cool to be able to see how the game has adapted to it's current state.

How does it feel to be a starter on the varsity team, but to only be a sophomore?

It's an incredible experience to be able to be a starter on such a talented team as a sophomore. When I was younger, I would see kids like Kip Orban and Matt Yeager playing and it's an amazing opportunity to be on the same field as them now.

Do you have a certain team, pro or college that you really follow closely?

My grandfather went to Syracuse as well as my father for part of his college life, so I've followed them. It's also cool to see programs like Denver and Penn start up and be contenders.

Do you have a certain lacrosse dream that you would love to accomplish? If so, what is it?

It has always been a dream of mine to be able to win a championship, whether it be FCIAC or State. I also would love to have the chance to play at the college level.
