Sports

Whiz Kid: Stephen Colodny

An interview with the Staples golfer who has already achieved one of the sport's greatest challenges.

What are some of your hobbies off of the links?

Besides golf (which is a priority besides school), I enjoy other sports, but mostly basketball. I try to keep in shape for the golf season.

When did you start playing golf?

I started playing golf when I was around 8, but at 13 it became my primary sport.

What was your motivation to pick up golf?

I was motivated by my dad to start playing golf. My family enjoys the game of golf and it was another sport for me to play.

Who is your favorite golfer to watch? Why?

My favorite golfer to watch is Tiger Woods. When he is in his prime and playing well there is no other golfer than can compete with him shot for shot. When he is playing well, it seems like he cant lose.

What are some of the nicest courses that you have played at? Which ones were your favorite? Why?

I have been privileged to play at a lot of nice courses. All four courses at Bandon Dunes, The Course at Yale, and PGA West to name a few. My favorite course is Yale. It is a classic golf course and is a true test of golf. It is a fair golf course that has a classic risk reward aspect to it.

What do you love most about golf?

The thing I love most about golf is that you are playing against yourself and trying to do the best you can do and no one else can really mess you up. It puts a lot of pressure on you to know that if you play badly it is your fault and you can't blame anyone else. In my mind, that is what makes golf the best sport.

If you could play at any course, with any player, who would it be?

If I could play at any course with any player it would be at Augusta National with Tiger Woods from 2000. Augusta because it is the most prestigious golf course in the world and it is a dream of mine to play there. Tiger from 2000 because he was arguably the most dominant player of all time then.

At such a young age, you were able to accomplish a remarkable feat. A hole in one. Describe the shot:

It was the second hole at Longshore, and my teammate Andrew Gai had just hit a great shot to about a foot. My goal was to get my ball inside of his. The hole was playing about 150, so I took a soft 8 iron right over the bunker at the pin. I saw it bounce once and then we couldn't see the ball. We walked up to the green and the ball was in the hole.

Describe your emotions after such an incredible moment.

I was ecstatic, not only because I made a hole in one, but also because I hit a really good shot.
