Health & Fitness

One Year In

Meet Jon. He's been training with me for 12 months, exclusively in a 1-1 setting and below is an interview with did with him about his experience at Aspire.

What’s your day job? Commercial Real Estate Investments

How’d you get into CrossFit / this type of training? Delray Beach. I wanted more of a challenge than the typical gym workout

What’d you do before training with Tommy / Aspire Fitness in terms of gym routine, nutrition, etc ? Worked out 3-4 times a week, lifted different muscle groups, ran. Nutrition was very poor, didn’t eat enough protein, sometimes one meal a day at six pm. A lot of macaroni and cheese.

How have you progressed in the following: strength, cardio fitness, burst work, nutrition, etc? We have made a tremendous amount of progress over the last year. I didn’t even know what a squat or dead lift was in the past and I have found that our workouts have taught me perfect technique and have led to strength in many other areas. We do a lot of burst work and interval training and I perform best at the burst workouts and am improving at the longer ones. Tommy gave me primal blueprint along with sheets about what to eat and has told me what to stay away from. I eat way way better than I used to eating a lot of protein from eggs, meats, chicken and fish, nuts, vegetables. Raw eggs especially.

What has been the biggest thing you’ve learned throughout the past year? I have learned that when you think you have nothing left in the tank think again!

What’s your favorite type of workout? Favorite lift? Least favorite? Favorite type of workout is strength mixed with burst. Favorite lift is now back squat. Least favorite lift is also back squat.

What are your goals moving forward? Goals going forward are to continue and improve upon the gains I have made and improve my quickness primarily and endurance.

What’s the HARDEST workout you’ve done here? I can’t remember every movement so you might have to fill in the blanks but probably the thirty minute one we did was the toughest. 50 wallballs 14lb or 20lb can’t remember, 500 m run, 50 box jumps, grab the 60lb sandbag and run back, 500 m row, 50 ballslams, 50 double unders, 50 abmat sit ups…

How’s the energy and atmosphere at Aspire for someone who’s never trained there? The energy is great. You walk in and you might be feeling tired or whatever but when you step into the gym its on. The music is going, Tommy is at the white board. Your objectives and workouts are clearly spelled out form the warmup to the last part. Tommy is a great motivator and encourages me to have fun while always striving for new goals. I keep a record of my progress in a journal and it is very good to look back and see where you excel and where you struggle.

After one year, Jon is not only WAY stronger, faster, fitter, leaner, etc but has started to really dial in lifestyle and nutrition choices. A year ago he could barely do a solid air squat or deadlift. Now he is crushing heavy squats but also setting PR’s in 400 meter runs and longer efforts. There isn’t one modality where has hasn’t VASTLY improved.

Also, his attitude is excellent and he is always ready to try ANYTHING. I know I can throw anything at him and although he may struggle at some points, he won’t give up and will always do what we ask. One thing we’ve emphasized is leaving the gym with beach, track, outdoor, sled, etc workouts. This is the first step of a long journey of health, fitness and wellness for Jon. We were training the other day at the track and a passerby asked “Is he a linebacker or a running back!?”…awesome!

We’ve removed the ability to reply as we work to make improvements. Learn more here
