Top Spots in Europe for 2013

CNN released an article titled, Top Spots in Europe for 2013 on June 18th, 2013. The summer is the perfect time to travel. Kids have summer vacation and adults are dreaming of time off from work. If you are planning on traveling to Europe, here are ten spots that lie in “travel shadows” and deserve to be on your radar. Paris and Rome are undoubtedly excellent places to visit, but are also packed with bustling tourists from around the world. 1.     Porto & the Douro Valley, Portugal

 Portugal’s second largest city is the perfect destination for a day trip. There are famous Port houses such as Taylor’s, W &J Graham’s, Fonseca Porto, and Casa Ramos Pinto. The tastings and tours are a great value- check out the Douro Valley and Wine Country tour. The artistic and culinary aspects of the community are thriving, so there is a lot to see and taste!

2.     Budapest, Hungary 

Budapest is starting to steal the cool from Berlin right now because they have so many unique summer pop-up bars in old buildings and gardens. There are so many sights to see, including the Palace of Miracles, folklore shows, Gresham Palace, and Margaret Island. Budapest is also known for its love of music. The Museum of Music History has been recently updated and an amazing attraction to see!

3.     Northern Iceland

Iceland is one of the most accessible places to view the northern lights, which is why this is a great place to check out while you are traveling in Europe. Iceland is well known for the Blue Lagoon Spa, Northern Lights in Akureyri, Golden Circle, and Reykjavik. You will see beautiful views of nature, including lava fields and waterfalls.

4.     Clinque Terre, Italy

Clinque Terre is a magnet for hikers because hiking through the five villages along the coastline has beautiful views of the water and the architecture of buildings off the cliffs. There is a secret beach that only locals know about in the smallest of the five towns, Corniglia.

5.     Moravia, Czech Republic

This spot is known for bike tours and wine tasting. It’s a lot slower of a pace than Prague, which makes it authentic and unique to that area. It is also known to be the best-preserved and most historic part of the country. Pictured above is Valtice Castle, with architecture from the 12th century and now is the Czech Republic’s National Wine Center.

6.     Bern, Switzerland

 Bern is named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its medieval architecture. August is a great time to visit this city because of the Buskers Bern Festival and the streets are filled with entertainment ranging from jugglers, puppeteers, and musicians. Albert Einstein’s home and Paul Klee museum are both interesting attractions to check out.

7.     Marseille, France

Marseille has been actively working on its image. There have been various renovations on museums and other cultural attractions. The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations opened on June 7th and the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Marseille has reopened after renovation. The city has established ten new sites for cultural activities.

8.     Croatia

Croatia has beautiful landmarks, such as the national park Krka, Mljet, 16 turquoise blue lakes of Plitvice lake, Northern Velebit, cathedrals, and more. Croatia is hosting the first World Art games this summer from June 29-July 10th. Croatia is filled with culture, attractions and museums to visit.

9.     Northern Ireland

The Giant’s Causeway is Northern Ireland’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Giant’s Causeway is 40,000 basalt columns that are the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. Another place to visit is the Fermanagh Lakelands which is an excellent place for watersports and adventures to the Marble Arch Caves European Geopark. Other well known spots in Northern Ireland is the Causeway Coast and Tyrone & The Sperrins.

10.     Copenhagen, Denmark

 According to Restaurant magazine’s annual ranking the two-Michelin star Noma city boasts the number two restaurant award in the world. Many say it is the most livable city in 2013 and very eco-friendly. The Amalienborg Palace was created in the 1700s and the Danish Rococco architecture makes it an important landmark in Copenhagen. The Brede Works used to be an old clothing factory but it has been transformed into a museum that attracts people worldwide. The Little Mermaid statue is also an important tourist attraction. This statue is at Langelinje Pier and was made in 1913.
