Diet Drinks Linked to Heart Attacks, Study Says

A study suggests an association between diet drinks and heart disease in women.

Women who regularly drink diet drinks could face an increased risk of heart attack and death, Reuters reported.

The study found women who drink two or more diet drinks a day were 30 percent more likely to have some sort of cardiovascular event and 50 percent more likely to die from it, Reuters reported.

"Our study suggests an association between higher diet drink consumption and mortality," Dr. Ankur Vyas told NBC News. "It's not an extreme risk."

About 60,000 middle aged women took part in the study which lasted about 10 years. As part of the study, questionnaires on food and drinks were completed.

NBC News reported that the study found that 8.5 percent of women who frequently drank diet drinks had some sort of heart disease compared to 6.8 percent of women who drank four or fewer diet drinks a week.

"We only found an association, so we can't say that diet drinks cause these problems," Vyas told Reuters.

To be clear, this study’s actual results do not prove that drinking diet beverages causes cardiovascular events among any population. The most likely explanation for the association the authors found in their research is “reverse causality,” meaning those who are overweight – and therefore at greater risk for heart disease – consume diet beverages in an effort to control their weight. In other words, it is highly probable that being overweight leads to greater diet beverage consumption, not that diet beverage consumption leads to obesity or obesity-related conditions such as heart disease. That said, diet beverage consumption has been shown to help with weight loss as part of an overall weight management plan, with numerous studies repeatedly demonstrating their benefits in helping to reduce calorie intake. -Maureen Beach, American Beverage Association

Glad I'm addicted to water. Used to be a diet coke drinker but now, one sip and all I can taste is chemicals...gross.

Aspartame is a known toxic. Pregnant women should avoid because it causes brain tumors to their growing fetus! I cant believe its still on the market!!

Drink Water or tea. Green tea is good for the colon and blood pressure. Drink mostly diet tea. Sodas eat through your bones like terminates eat through wood.
