Gilbertie's Herb Gardens, established as a cut-flower business in 1922, is the largest herb grower in the country. The business supplies more than 400 varieties of fresh herb plants to American consumers via nurseries and garden centers throughout the northeastern and mid-Atlantic United States. The family-run business operates its retail center in Westport, in a complex featuring greenhouses, outdoor formal display gardens and a retail and gift shop. The selection of herbs includes hard-to-find scented geraniums, stinging nettles and angelica, as well as decorative herbal topiaries of rosemary and myrtle shaped into spheres, circles and hearts. Seasonal organic vegetables, flowers and bulbs are also available, and Christmas trees and wreaths are sold during the holiday season. Lectures and workshops are given regularly on such topics as preparing lawns for winter, conserving summer's bounty and medicinal herbs.
