Inklings Sports Editor Michael Nussbaum learns how the world games can unite nations.
From the Olympic spirit to incredible national pride, Inklings Sports Editor Michael Nussbaum describes an experience to remember when he attended the 2010 Winter Games in Vancover. "From my window I could see the overwhelming Canadian flags, American T-shirts, Russian jumpsuits, Chinese hats, and Korean signs," he writes in his latest column for the Staples High School student newspaper. "But even with those well-known countries dominating the picture, I was still able to distinguish the Latvians, the Netherlands, and Switzerland from the pack. From my beautiful view from my hotel, I never once saw any conflicts between any countries, however, just pure excitement, anticipation, and honest nationalism." Click here to read more of Nussbaum…

Wreckers now head to states.
They may be young, but they put forth an effort worthy of a group of seniors Thursday night as the Staples boys swim team took seventh place at the FCIAC Championship. "I'm very pleased with the results," coach Jeffrey Schare said at the meet. "It was fun for the swimmers to go against such great competition." "It was an impressive night of swimming and Diving for Staples," he said Friday. "Every individual race and relay time was a personal best. It was a thrilling night of swimming and has set us up nicely to go even faster in the CIAC tournament." The Wreckers were lead by Zach Slater, who took fourth place in Wednesday's diving competition. That got Staples off to a running start, and helped propel them to more points. Freshman …

The team now advances to the second round in the state tournament.
The watchword for tournament season is survive and advance, and on Tuesday the Staples girls' basketball team did both, barely surviving a 30-29 win over Bridgeport Central. The victory advances the Wreckers to the Sweet Sixteen — the second round of the state class LL girls basketball tournament. "A game like this, it's all about rock-solid defense and a timely shot made here or there," said Staples head coach Ed Huydic. "It's a wonderful feeling to advance in the states when you know that you're not 100 percent healthy. Everybody knows we're not 100 percent healthy." Missing four players, the Wreckers (15-7) held Central (8-13) and their all-FCIAC center, Talisha Peeler (13 points, 20 rebounds) to their lowest point total of the season …

The boys basketball team has one more regular season game before the FCIAC tournament.
Brendan Rankowitz, the only senior on the Staples boys' basketball team, had a Senior Night to remember. After a back-and-forth four quarters, his team dominated in overtime, earning a 79-75 win against Ridgefield. "It feels good," Rankowitz said. "The juniors on the team played a hell of a game. This is the last time I'm going to play here, so it feels great to get a win, especially in overtime. "We had already won a game (Stamford) in overtime this year," Rankowitz continued, "so we felt pretty confident going in, especially since a couple of their guys had some pretty bad foul trouble. We just knew if we'd make our foul shots, we'd end up winning this game." The game had been a truly even battle. The Wreckers had damaged themselves …

Staples High School placed 12th overall.
One score and four years ago, a team besides the Danbury Hatters won the FCIAC wrestling title. At Saturday's final round of the Joe Sikorski FCIAC Wrestling Championships Fairfield-Warde put an end to their reign, beating them out by eight points and giving the Mustangs their first title in school history. Staples High School had a tough first day at the tournament, sending only four of their wrestlers on to compete in the semi-finals. The top finisher for the Wreckers was Said Sarfaraz, who took second place in the 275-pound division. He had a great tournament to advance all the way to the finals, but ran into a brick wall named Jeff Starr from Brien McMahon. Starr was wrestling a weight that deseved to be in the division, but Safaraz …

While a victory is always the goal, one senior says "the team is more important than the swim."
Five senior members of the Staples swim team passed a milestone Thursday: the final meet in their home pool. At the traditional mid-meet break in the action, an appreciative Senior Day crowd of parents, friends, and sweethearts cheered as the seniors received keepsakes and commendations from head coach Jeff Schare. Then the Wreckers (5-5) returned to the pool and finished trouncing the 2-7 Fairfield Coop swim team, recording 10 of 12 first places on their way to a 110-74 victory. "It was really great," said senior diver and sprinter Matt Mirkine. "It was huge, having all these people and all the decorations up, knowing that a part of it was for me." Staples started fast, with Matthew Wisher, Joss Abel, Cory Bacon and Kyle Bacon teaming up …

Another win for the Wreckers.
In their last home game of the year Friday, Lady Wreckers' senior guard Chelsea Salamone went out with a bang as she erupted 19 points leading the Staples girls basketball team to an easy 56-37 victory over the Wilton Warriors. The starting point guard shined on Senior Night by shooting a perfect seven out of seven from the field and four-for-four from the free throw line. Salamone's stellar performance helped the Lady Wreckers improve their overall record to 12-5 and 11-4 in the FCIAC. Despite the 19-point win, the game was close in the beginning when the Lady Wreckers ended the first quarter with just a four-point lead. As they have all season long, the Lady Wreckers thrived on the defensive end. Staples made a complete turn around in…
