Southport's Blow Dry Opening Second Location in Westport

The Westport site on Church Lane is expected to open at the end of June.

September Sirico knows what it takes to have good hair.

Sirico, who owns Blow Dry Southport, grew up in the hair styling business.

A longtime Westport resident and recent transplant to Fairfield, she worked at and managed Greg and Tony Salon -- her family's salon, which has been a fixture in Westportfor 35 years.

This May, Sirico and the staff at Blow Dry Southport celebrated the blow dry bar's first anniversary. Come the end of June, they'll open up a second site on Church Lane in Westport.

"We've been so well received, and so supported by the community," Sirico said. "It's been fantastic."

The reception and general popularity of the blow dry bar trend can be attributed to the staff of stylists, who are "the best at what they do," Sirico said.

The Southport locations anniversary coincided with the coming of summer -- a season that can wreak havoc on hair.

"The pool, sun, salt water, even wearing it up in an elastic" can cause wear and tear, Sirico said.

She and stylist Lachers Reese offered tips to keep hair healthy and looking good throughout the summer.

To keep hair healthy, it needs to start healthy.

"Hair that's moisturizers and hydrated won't have to fight frizz as much," Sirico said.

If your hair is already fried, start a regular conditioning regimen. Sirico and Reese said the kind of treatment you use depends on your hair type, but a conditioner containing omega-3 is great for all hair types.

Next comes styling. At Blow Dry Southport, the staff is "very conscious" of "maintaining the integrity of the hair" during blowouts, which utilize heat styling.

"As with any heat styling, your hair needs protection," Sirico said. Using the right tools, brushes, and protecting serums/sprays is important.

If you've had your hair styled -- especially with a blowout -- Sirico and Reese's last tip is to maintain the style.

Depending on your hair type, a blowout can last around five days, Sirico said -- but that takes maintenance.

Preserve your style in the shower by pulling hair up into a high bun and setting it in place with bobby pins, Reese said. Then take a shower cap with all-around coverage to lock out moisture and humidity.
