Moms and dads, gather up the kids and some favorite pieces of old clothing – hats, shirts, slacks – and come to the Westport Historical Society on Saturday, September 28, for a fall scarecrow-making party.
The society will provide the materials, including garden stakes, straw stuffing, olds clothes and hats. All you need bring is your imagination and any accessories you want to personalize your creation.
The family fun day starts at 1:30 p.m. and runs to 3. It will be an opportunity for parents to do a hands-on activity with their children and at the same time learn about the straw figures farmers worldwide use to keep birds out of their fields. If you were to travel in the Far East you might even see them in rice paddies.

The party will include a discussion of Westport’s rich farming history and how, during the mid-1800s, it became a major onion-growing center.
