UPDATE: Naked Man Claiming He's Jesus Caused I-95 Accident

Firefighters worked for three hours to remove the driver trapped in a tractor trailer.

A nude man "yelling that he was Jesus" around the northbound Darien Service Plaza contributed to the cause of a five-vehicle pile-up and tractor trailer accident Saturday morning, according to police.

Though the wreck caused major delays on I-95 for hours after the incident, the injuries sustained were "relatively minor," according Sgt. Jeremiah Marron of the Darien Police Department.

The episode began around 5:00 a.m., when police received a report of a man running around the Darien Service Plaza, screaming and claiming that he was Jesus. When the officers arrived on the scene, he jumped into his car and fled down the highway, Marron said.

Darien, Norwalk, and state police units finally caught up with him around exit 16, but as they were apprehending the man, a passing driver who had begun veering toward the units in the shoulder swerved suddenly to correct his course.

At that point, a tractor trailer driving near the first vehicle braked and turned sharply, striking four cars before overturning. Marron said the wreck brought down an overhead highway sign and caused damage to several police cars.

After being stuck in the mangled cab of the tractor trailer for three hours rescuers were able to extract the driver, whose injuries—along with those of the other motorists—were remarkably minor, according to police. Darien Police, Darien EMS, and Wesport and Norwalk firefighters were among those on the scene.

For three hours, beginning at 5 a.m., the Westport and Norwalk Fire Departments worked to remove the driver of a tractor trailer truck that had rolled on its side in the northbound lane of I-95 near exit 16 in Norwalk.

The departments responded at 5:27 a.m. to find the tractor trailer on its side with the driver heavily trapped in the cab of the truck, according to Assistant Chief Robert Yost of the Westport Fire Department.  The tandem tractor trailer was on its side up against a large tree and the only contact with the driver was by his elbow, Yost said in a release.

Norwalk Rescue Company 2 went to work on the under side of the truck while Westport Rescue Company 3 was assigned to gain access to the driver on the side by the tree.  Both companies worked for 3 hours to untangle the driver using almost every available tool from both rescue trucks.

As metal was cut and pushed from the driver, Norwalk Paramedics were able to crawl into the cab and start medical treatment of the injured driver.  Heavy truck wreckers were called to the scene to assist in stabilizing and lifting the truck to gain better access to the driver.   All the time the rescuers were working with diesel fuel leaking from one of the ruptured tanks, which was creating a fire hazard during the incident.

Norwalk Paramedics remained in contact with the trauma surgeon at Norwalk Hospital coordinating the pre-hospital medical treatment of the driver.  At 8:47 a.m., the driver was successfully removed from the vehicle and transported to Norwalk Hospital. His exact condition is unknown at this time though Marron described it as "minor."

The Westport Fire Department cleared the scene at 9:42 a.m.

The investigation remains open and is being handled by the Connecticut State Police. It was not immediately known whether the naked man would face charges.
