Urban Outfitters Coming to Downtown Westport

The clothing store is expected to open in a year.

Urban Outfitters signed a lease on Friday to occupy space on 101-107 Post Road E. David Waldman, founder of David Adam Realty, expects the international clothing chain to move in by April 2012.

“I’m very excited for them coming,” Waldman told Patch. “It’s going to be a phenomenal [addition to downtown Westport].”

Urban Outfitters, Inc. operates several retail chains, including Westport’s . Urban Outfitters caters to a younger crowd (teens and young adults) with casual clothing. There are more than 100 stores throughout the world. Current Connecticut locations include Greenwich and the Yale University campus at New Haven.

The space was formerly occupied by Metro Swimshop, which . The building will undergo a total makeover. Urban Outfitters coming to town is one of many changes expected in the downtown area in the next several years.

“There’s a lot of good things happening and I think the catalyst was the GAP [moving],” said Waldman.

Later this year, Gap will be moving in to 125 Main St., which is owned by Waldman’s company, creating vacancies for potential new businesses.

Here's a list of to downtown Westport.

  • The Westport Weston Family Y will be moving and Waldman, along with his business partners, plan to he plan to create a mix of retail and residential offerings in the downtown landmark in 2014.
  • on 76 Post Road E. hopes to next door in the cobblestoned Old Town Hall building to sell outdoor and garden items. Their current home is the former Fine Arts Theatre. First Selectman Gordon Joseloff is the managing member of the family-owned company that maintains the building. Restoration Hardware hopes to occupy the empty building later this spring.
  • The Levitt Pavillion hopes to have an entirely new look by 2012. The popular summer concert venue has already received all the necessary approvals to the area.
  • The downtown Post Office is moving, and a developer is scheduled to Tenants for the building, which will likely be subdivided, are wanted.
  • The Westport Public Library is in the very early stages of conceptualizing a remodeling that would take better advantage of its space.
  • Some have moved in during the past couple months.
  • The Westport Cinema Initiative just had their at the Westport Country Playhouse. This nonprofit organization hopes to attract a movie theater to Westport and another series of films is scheduled for this summer.
