Community Corner

Westporter of the Week: Patty Cope

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month. As program director for Child Advocates of Connecticut, Patti works to support the volunteers who advocate for abused and neglected children in our community.

Name:  Patty Cope

Occupation:  April is Child Abuse Awareness month. This is an opportunity to remind people how prevalent child abuse is right here in Fairfield County.  There are well over 600 children involved in the child protection system in our community. I began working as a court-appointed special advocate for these abused and neglected children in 2008. My work has given me an understanding of how challenging life can be for these children.

In 2010, as a result of state budget cuts, was formed, funded solely by private donations. Child Advocates of CT speaks up for children involved in court proceedings in order to secure a safe and permanent home as quickly as possible.  We work in collaboration with judges, attorneys, social workers, schools and health providers to ensure the well being of each child in the system.

My job as program director is to supervise and support the volunteers in the Stamford Court. Our volunteers work tirelessly to advocate on behalf of those who need it most. I love my job because I get to see firsthand what a difference our organization makes in the lives of these children. To find out more about the organization, please visit CTchildadvocates.org.
