Creative Drive Triumphs in the Town Players’ production of Amadeus

A theatrical triumph took place at the Powerhouse Theatre in Waveny Park at the Sunday, November 6th matinee of the Town Players of New Canaan's production of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus.  Following a difficult and protracted tech week that included four cancelled rehearsals and rehearsing in the cold, the creative drive of the Amadeus cast and its sound and light technicians to put on a good show overcame all obstacles and the show shined with intelligence and a surprising humor that balances this ironic and dark tale of Antonio Salieri’s attempt to destroy and smother Mozart the man and his music. As the actors, one by one, came on stage for their curtain calls in an “opening night” that was a Sunday matinee, they were greeted with “bravos” and a standing ovation as all over the theatre the audience rose to applaud a remarkable achievement. Thus opened the Town Players 65th season and 203rd show. Produced and directed, respectively, by New Canaan’s Robert Doran and Lynne Bolton, the cast’s ten actors, Eric Schultz (Antonio Salieri), Bobby Pavia (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart), Ammie Renée Brown (Constanze Mozart), Tom Petrone (Emperor Joseph II), Manny Lieberman (Royal Chamberlain), Gary Battaglia (Director of the Imperial Opera), John Pyron (Prefect of the Imperial Library), Megan Harris and Michael Hodges (the Venticelli) and Kathleen Klatte (Teresa Salieri) gave fine performances and the costumes, set, sound and lights are beautiful.
