5 Things All About Westport: Feb. 8

More nasty weather and a plan to honor Westport's history.

  • Brace yourself for a miserable – and possibly dangerous –day. The National Weather Service predicts gusts with a wind chill as low as zero degrees into tonight. Bundle up and stay safe.
  • Tonight, a team of Staples students will rise up to . The uber-difficult quiz show pits teams from different schools against each other, and tonight they compete against Thomaston High School. The season premiere begins at 5:30 p.m.
  • There’s an empty patch of land that could be undergoing some changes soon. There’s a plan to turn site of the former West Parish Meeting House , which was burned to the ground by the British during the Revolutionary War. The plan to change the unmarked property to better reflect its rich history is being presented. The meeting house is located at the northeastern corner of Sherwood Island Connector and Greens Farms Road.
  • The state legislature is considering an expansion of the plastic bottle bill to include juice pouches, energy drinks and other beverages. Some say that the 5 cent deposit is another tax. Others call it an incentive to recycle. Join the debate in .
  • Most towns are lucky to have one Rotary organization. Westport supports two of the charitable groups. Today at noon,  the worlds will collide at the Inn at Longshore. Lou Weinstein, the founder of the Westport Sunrise Rotary Club in 1988,. There is a $20 to have lunch with a lot of great people.
