Update: Fire Destroys Guyer Road Home

The sole occupant reportedly jumped out of the window to escape the fire, suffering cuts and bruises.

A smoke detector saved the life of a man when his house on 27 Guyer Road became engulfed in flames.

Past 1 a.m. on Wednesday morning, the sole occupant of the home was woken by the detector. The man, who was described by the fire department as being in his mid 50s, was trapped in the second floor to the thick smoke on the first floor.

From the second floor, he hung from the window and fell to the ground, suffering some cuts and bruises.

The Westport Fire Department responded at 1:07 a.m. with four Engines, one Rescue and One Command Car. Eight off duty Fire fighters responded to the call. Westport E.M.S and the American Red Cross were called to the scene to standby, according to a press release.

The Fairfield Fire Department sent an Engine Company to cover Westport Fire Headquarters for the duration of the fire.

There were no firefighter injuries. The last fire unit left the scene at 6 a.m

The split level Cape Cod-style home is owned by Ames Mark Talbot. It was built in 1960.
