Wakeman Town Farm Backyard Fundraiser a Success

A crowd came out in support of the Wakeman Town Farm and Sustainability Center Saturday night at the home of Elizabeth and Eric Beller, otherwise known as Sundance Hill Farm, in Westport.

With mojitos and a variety of farm-inspired hors d'oeuvres prepared by the grassroots Wakeman Farm Transition Team, the cocktail party raised more than $9,000 to support the efforts to turn the farm into an educational center where kids and adults can learn about farming and living a more sustainable lifestyle.

The team's goal is to raise $25,000 in initial operating costs to get the farm up and running and then, it plans to create an array of self-sustaining classes, camps and educational programs which will cover the expenses at the farm.

Staples Enviornmental Studies teacher, Michael Aitkenhead, and his wife, Carrie, spoke to the group and expressed their gratitude for the townwide efforts to return them to their home at the farm, where they once again hope to teach, inspire and create a sense of community.
